Home Toy Commercial Animation Cobra Night Raven (1986)

Sunbow's ability to draw and ink a believable depth and shape for the clouds never ceases to amaze me. Like the G.I.Joe HAVOC, a smaller reconnaissance vehicle is launched from the Cobra Night Raven and attacks the ground forces.
The decision to have an extreme long shot of the G.I.Joe convoy allows the animators the opportunity to create an incredible effect. As the camera follows the convoy from right to left, the ground will appear to move at a faster pace than the mountains in the background. At the same time, the Cobra Night Raven and the reconnaissance plane fly from the mountains in the background and toward the camera.
The closeness of the Night Raven to the camera allows the editors to cut to a ride-along shot on the G.I.Joe AWE and also allows the viewer to "live the adventure." Because several perspectives were rendered realistically, the usual brilliant inking job on the explosions and the intense camera angles, this is one of Sunbow's better animation sequences.
